As she stood by the 47th president during the ceremony, many couldn’t help but notice the striking resemblance her ensemble bore to a familiar icon.
Melania donned a navy coat paired with a wide-brimmed navy hat adorned with an ivory stripe. While some admired her sophisticated style, others quickly pointed out the uncanny similarity to Michael Jackson’s signature look from his “Smooth Criminal” era.
One social media user quipped, “Is it just me, or is Melania trying to imply that Trump is a ‘smooth criminal’ with this outfit choice?” Another added with a touch of humor, “She looks like Smooth Criminal-era Michael Jackson at a funeral.”
Despite the playful jabs, not all comments were critical. Fashion outlets like Women’s Wear Daily praised Melania’s attire as an “all-American ensemble” crafted by designer Adam Lippes. This marked a shift for the Slovenian-born former first lady, who often leans toward European designers. In contrast, her election night ensemble had been a Christian Dior piece.
Donald Trump also surprised many with his sartorial choice, wearing a purple tie instead of his signature red or occasional blue. The departure from tradition didn’t go unnoticed and added another layer of intrigue to the day’s fashion narratives.
This isn’t the first time Melania’s inauguration day fashion has drawn comparisons or admiration. In 2017, during Donald Trump’s first inauguration, she wore a powder-blue Ralph Lauren coat and dress that many likened to Jacqueline Kennedy’s timeless style.
Since Election Day, Melania has largely stuck to neutral tones, according to the New York Post. However, her bold navy ensemble at the inauguration ensured she once again made a lasting impression—whether seen as a nod to classic American fashion or a subtle homage to pop culture.
